16 Jan Celebrating Excellence in Accessibility: Winners of the 2024 AppleVis Golden Apple and David Goodwin Awards
Among the most frequently answered questions across our entire range of training courses at Black Light, are those concerning the relationship between blind people and technology. With artificial intelligence, smart devices and the rapid development in this field in general, it is expected that you will wonder how and under what conditions technology can be helpful in the daily life and professional life of people with visual impairments.
It is not uncommon for us to observe our trainees (even technology executives) coming into contact for the first time through our company's programs with all the ways that make technology accessible.
For this purpose, but also to inform the blind community itself, we translated the article by “Be my Eyes” about these very important awards given by the community itself and we invite you to read it and ask yourself: Is it really different from any similar award post that will be published in the press? Is it really time to take our knowledge a step further and dispel the myth that blind people are outside of technological developments? A good opportunity to also take a personal quiz! Be My Eyes is excited to celebrate the winners of the 13th Annual AppleVis Golden Apple Awards and the David Goodwin First Prize.
Since 2012, the AppleVis Golden Apple Awards have provided a platform for Apple product users to recognize outstanding developer efforts in accessibility. This year, our partnership with AppleVis reached an exciting milestone with the launch of the David Goodwin Award, which honors developers who have made an outstanding, long-lasting impact on the blind and partially sighted community.
Award Criteria and Nomination Process
The awards celebrate excellence in accessibility and innovation. The Best App and Best Game awards recognize apps that are fully accessible, launched or have undergone significant updates in 2024, and demonstrate leading-edge design and functionality. The Developer of the Year Award recognizes active support and significant updates to apps that serve partially sighted, blind, and deafblind users. The David Goodwin Award honors developers with at least three years of continuous dedication to accessible development, design excellence, and meaningful community involvement.
Nominations were compiled by community leaders and the AppleVis Editorial Team, taking into account activities such as app catalog entries and feedback from users.
]the community. Voting took place from December 13 to December 23, 2024 and was open to all eligible members of the AppleVis community. To maintain impartiality, Be My Eyes and our app were not eligible for nomination.
